Brick Porch Paving - Tuckpointing Repair

The corrosive nature of the freeze-thaw cycle on brick porch paving is devastating on unless routinely maintained.

Brick paving requires a lot of maintenance due to heavy pedestrian traffic and weathering. For a solid repair all joints should be ground out, cleaned and tuck-pointed with a fresh pointing mortar and the brick paving cleaned and touched up. 

The process for repair brick porch paving can quite detailed and lengthy 

In the photos below all the mortar joints have been ground down and the brick porch paving has been cleaned. This improves the chances for the pointing mortar to form a tight bond between the bricks and a solid bed for pointing..

Looking closely at the joints you will see that some of the joints are deeper than the typical 3/4" depth that is used for the grinder setting. This is the result of the extreme deterioration that has taken place in the brick paving..

Proper demolition and cleaning are key
to a quality brick paving repair

Here you can see the proper relief or the depth, that the grinding of the joints should reveal.

Some areas are deeper than 3/4" due to deterioration but maybe 50% of this repair is within the 3/4" depth of standard tuck pointing work.


After cleaning, the brick porch paving is allow to dry over night. The following day begins the tuck pointing process.

Here the process of tuck pointing begins. Compression of the joint is very important in this environment.

All joints finished as the work progresses. This section of the brick porch paving has been completed.

Nothing is complete without the final cleaning and staining to blend

All of the joints are filled until the whole brick porch paving repair has been completed. Then after a day or so the brick porch is cleaned to remove any stains.  

Tuck pointing is complete and all that is left to do us a final cleaning to remove smudges and smears.

Final cleaning has been completed and project is done.
