Most of us never think about the inherent dangers of steps and more importantly, the extreme peril of deteriorating steps, especially deteriorating brick steps. A deteriorated brick step creates a trip hazard that pose a menace to your family, friends or the guests that visit your home.

Do not take chances! Get a precision brick step repair!

The reason a deteriorated brick step is so dangerous is because of the individual unit nature of brick material. When a brick step are put into place and the brick masonry ‘sets’ it becomes a monolithic structure much like concrete. However, brick mortar joints can and do deteriorate at a faster rate than the bricks themselves so, eventually this deterioration allow the bricks to loosen. So someone stepping onto a loose brick can unexpectedly shift a brick which makes them loose their balance and slip or fall.

This is not only dangerous for a visitor to your property but may create a cancellation of your insurance policy should someone get hurt.  Usually the bricks on the steps are salvageable and can be used again in the average brick step repair. This can only be determined by a visual inspection of a brick step to assess the degree of damage to the bricks.

One of the key factors for a brick step repair is to use a quality bonding agent in the mortar. This allows the mortar to bond as well as possible to an often deteriorating substrate. Care should always be taken by the tradesman you employ, to distress the newness of the repair so it blends in with the existing masonry as well as can be expected considering that it is a repair.

Once you have a precision brick step repair you should protect it

Just a friendly reminder that you should never use salt to melt ice from brick steps as this will cause deterioration of the bricks and mortar to occur rapidly. Also a sealer should be applied to the steps every few years to help minimize the volume of water that is likely to leach into the mortar joints and freeze during the harsh winter months. Make sure that you contact a reliable contractor who has experience in this type of work.  Precision and attention to detail is important to the success of a brick step repair.
